IRS Tax Enforcement Research Center

The Research Center is TaxCase Review's hub for IRS enforcement data. We compile public records into state, county, and industry views so taxpayers and the professionals who advise them can see where federal tax lien activity is actually concentrated — and what it means for the people most exposed to it. Our database currently tracks 32,863 federal tax lien filings across the states we monitor, and we publish the breakdowns below as research reports rather than marketing claims.

Quick Answer

What is the TaxCase Review Research Center?

The TaxCase Review Research Center is a hub for IRS enforcement data — federal tax lien statistics, county-level filing data, and contractor tax-risk analysis. It compiles public records (federal PACER court records and Notices of Federal Tax Lien filed with county clerks) plus national IRS Data Book context into state, county, and industry breakdowns. Figures that cannot be sourced exactly are published as modeled estimates, clearly labeled, so the data can be cited responsibly.

State Lien Reports

County-by-county federal tax lien data for each state we monitor (modeled estimates from public records).

Methodology

We compile federal tax lien filings from public records and organize them by state, county, and industry. Where a single authoritative count is not available, we publish modeled estimates anchored to our tracked totals and informed by population, industry mix, and observed filing patterns. Modeled figures are labeled on every page and are meant to show direction and relative magnitude — not to state official IRS totals. Nothing in our research is a guarantee about any individual taxpayer's situation, and individual balances should always be confirmed against an IRS account transcript.

Data Sources

  • Public federal court records (PACER)
  • Notices of Federal Tax Lien recorded with county clerks & recorders
  • IRS Data Book (national filing context)
