Arizona Tax Data Methodology

We are committed to transparency about our data sources, calculation methods, and confidence levels. This page explains how we develop the statistics and estimates presented throughout our Arizona tax resolution content.

Primary Data Sources

Our Arizona tax statistics are derived from multiple authoritative sources:

IRS Data Book
Official IRS statistics

Annual publication from irs.gov/statistics providing state-level collection data, lien filings, and enforcement activities.

Confidence: Official

U.S. Census Bureau
Demographic data

American Community Survey (ACS) 2023 data for population, median income, and demographic factors used in county-level estimates.

Confidence: Official

Arizona DOR
State tax data

Arizona Department of Revenue publications provide state tax context that helps calibrate federal tax estimates.

Confidence: Official

Bureau of Labor Statistics
Employment data

BLS data on employment, industry composition, and self-employment rates inform our industry-specific estimates.

Confidence: Official

Confidence Level Definitions

We use a four-tier confidence system to clearly communicate the reliability of each statistic:

Official

Data directly from government sources (IRS, Census, state agencies) without modification. These figures can be independently verified.

Modeled

County-level estimates derived from official state totals using population, income, and industry factors. Methodology is documented and reproducible.

Estimated

Industry-specific and specialized estimates based on available data, industry reports, and reasonable assumptions. Subject to greater uncertainty.

Projected

Forward-looking estimates based on trend analysis. These projections are inherently uncertain and should be used for general guidance only.

County-Level Calculation Methods

The IRS publishes state-level data but not county-level statistics. We estimate county figures using:

  • Population weighting: County share of state population
  • Income adjustment: Median income relative to state average
  • Industry factors: Concentration of high-risk industries (construction, self-employment)
  • Historical patterns: Known filing patterns from court records and property liens

Example Calculation

If Arizona has 21,080 annual tax lien filings and Maricopa County represents 60% of the state population with 10% higher median income and 15% higher self-employment concentration, we calculate:

21,080 × 0.60 × 1.10 × 1.05 ≈ 14,250 filings
